The Butakoola Fifty is a 50 mile (half-century) bike tour organized to raise money for a sustainable development project in Butakoola Village. Butakoola Village is located 50 miles outside Kampala, Uganda, East Africa.  The villagers there are hard working rural farmers with very little means to purchase needed food and supplies for their family. What little they had was wiped out when plant diseases like Banana and Cassava Wilt swept through their village. Now they are left without crops to sell and no other means to make a living. Many villager’s only choice to get water in the dry season is to have their children pull the orange and brown colored water from the nearby swamp. The picture below is of a Butakoola child collecting water in the wet season, when the water is more clean and accessible.

The people of Butakoola Village have a simple dream – a more desirable future. We believe that individuals can create this future through self-determined means and should serve as their own catalyst for improvement. The Butakoola Village Association for Development (BUVAD), A not-for-profit organization, assists these individuals in acquiring resources and training to bring this dream to fruition.

Together, we will ride 50 miles (1/2 century) – the same distance Butakoola Village residents must walk to reach needed resources in the nearest sizable town of Kampala. Two SAG stations will be provided with drinks and snacks and you will receive a t-shirt and certificate to recognize your contribution. Ride support will be provided. Each rider is asked to raise between $250 and $500. Check out the “Fund-raising” page to find out how. The ride is designed to be a fun tour passing through scenic areas.
